If you’ve been wondering why I’ve been quiet lately, it’s because I’ve been off-island for a little over a week. I was up in Florida seeing some doctors at the Cleveland Clinic and visiting my son’s family in St. Augustine. Four grandkids under one roof meant there was never a dull moment—but I sure missed the breeze and the blooms of St. Croix. It’s good to be back home.
While I was in Florida, I also made time to visit several large orchid nurseries near Orlando and had some great conversations with vendors like Krull-Smith and Ecuagenera. I was blown away by the quality and the variety in their collections. We’re considering doing some small “test” orders from each of them to see what our orchid friends on St. Croix think. The orchids may cost a bit more, but I think the quality will speak for itself.

Summer Slows on St. Croix.
Now that we’re in the middle of the “summer slows,” many of our regular customers are off-island visiting family or cooling off stateside. As a result, we’ll be cutting back our shipments for the next couple of months. That said, Win and I aren’t taking a break—we’re using this time to give our over 1000 orchids at the Farm in Mon Bijou the attention they deserve. A little TLC goes a long way.
Something Special from Em.
Just before I left for Florida, we had the honor of purchasing the entire orchid collection of our good friend, Emelyn Morris-Sayre. Em is heading back to Colorado, and we’re incredibly grateful she entrusted her orchids to us.
The collection arrived just before I left, so we haven’t had time to evaluate everything yet. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be repotting, dividing, and assessing these beautiful plants. Once we’ve done the work, we’ll host a special event so our local orchid lovers can bring a piece of Em’s collection into their own gardens. Stay tuned—it’s going to be something special.
Bark and Bloom Updates,
Win also tracked down an Orchiata bark supplier and locked in an amazing deal. We’ll have 35-liter bags and smaller quarter-bags available as soon as the shipment arrives, and the prices will knock your socks off.
In the meantime, we still have a handful of blooming Dendrobiums at The Landing for just $15 and blooming/spiking Catasetums for $20 or 3/$50.
And I’ll be up at the Farm this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come say hello and check out what’s blooming!
Happy Orchiding,Tom and Win
